How to turn on/off archivelog in Oracle

To turn on the archive log in oracle, login into sql prompt as user with sysdba permissions:

C:\> sqlplus / as sysdba

Run the below to find if your DB is running in archive log mode

sql> archive log list;

Database log mode              No Archive Mode
Automatic archival             Disabled
Archive destination            USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST
Oldest online log sequence     43
Current log sequence           45

If you notice the database log mode has ” No Archive Mode”, then its running in no archive log mode. To run in archive mode, please follow the below steps:

SQL> shutdown immediate;

SQL> startup mount

SQL> alter database archivelog;

SQL> alter database open;

You can also do this through Enterprise Manager, do this by navigating to Availability -> Recovery Settings and selecting the ARCHIVELOG Mode check box. The database must be restarted after making this change.
